Time needed: 15 minutes.
With all the things beauty blenders can do to transform your foundation application, it’s important that after each use you properly clean them to allow for optimum performance. Not to mention that clean blenders are just plain less gross. The best & easiest way to clean your beauty blender is with this DIY cleaning method in a few easy steps.
Have you ever wanted to know how to clean your beauty blender? I’ve been using beauty blenders for a few years now and have had them last for more than a year. Cleaning them thoroughly after each use can improve their lifespan.
The beauty blender is a miracle worker in foundation application. It makes that flawless airbrushed look possible with just one swoop of the sponge. However, its’ genius design also means it builds up with bacteria over time and becomes a hotbed for germs. To prevent bacteria from growing on your doll hairs, keep your sponges clean! Here is the step by step guide to cleaning your beauty blender!
Any beauty blender user can tell you that cleaning your blender is not their favorite task. The way most people brush off the remnants of foundation and concealer and call it a day isn’t the best way to clean your beauty sponge. If you’re sick of your blenders quick deterioration, try this method to get your beauty sponge looking like new!
- Soak
The first thing you need to do is plunge the beauty blender in a mug of very hot water. 2-3 mins should be enough, but if you can leave it there for longer then go for it. It needs to soak in the hot water for a little while so it becomes nice and soft.
First things first, you’re going to want to get your beauty blender nice and soaked in a mug of very hot water. It should only take a couple of minutes for it to become nice and pliable, and if you can hold it under there for longer then go right ahead, but I think two or three minutes will do the trick.
The longer you leave your beauty sponge in the hot water, the softer it will become. Gently swirl it around for a minute or two, and then leave it to soak. - Add some dish washing soap and cover in water
First, start by soaking your beauty blender in a glass of warm water filled with a drop of dishwashing liquid. Since beauty blenders are some type of sponges that don’t dissolve, you can use any soap to clean them. After the sponge sits for several minutes, “massage” the soap and gently rub it to clean.
- Microwave it
The main takeaway here is that you can also put your beauty blender in the microwave. The heat will kill any bacteria that builds up, while also making the sponge softer.
Microwave your Beauty Blender to completely disinfect it. Microwave your brush cleaner for the same reason. - Cool
When the beauty blender is hot and steamy, your pores will assimilate the heat and it’ll make it harder for you to blend in foundation evenly. Wait a few minutes for the sponge to cool down before adding foundation on top. By then, it should be easier to apply and give good coverage.
Rinsing your blender in hot water will destroy it, and you should never put it directly into the dishwasher. First, let it cool down and then run it under running water if there is any makeup residue left in your beauty blender. - Wash
Now, wash the makeup sponge as you would normally do. This is the most important part of keeping your sponge clean so it won’t get all gross. Washing them with a mild soap and water will help extend it’s life, plus keep you and your face cleaner. This also works on brushes as well!
In most cases, washing it with water will help keep it clean so you don’t have to buy a new one. Wash the makeup sponge using water to clean it. Use a washcloth on it and rub vigorously. This will get rid of any dirt or stains that have previously been built up.
Make sure the water is lukewarm and not too hot to avoid destroying the material as well. - Final result
This is what works for me, but everyone has their own way they want to clean their beauty blenders, so try out each method and see which one works best for you!
